Commercial Service Plumber

The Service Plumber is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems, fixtures and other plumbing used for water distribution and wastewater disposal in commercial office, healthcare, and industrial buildings. The plumber reads blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems, water supply and water waste systems. Then plans, installs and services plumbing systems, fixtures, piping, equipment, and controls.

Work Activities

  • Review building plans/specifications to determine layout of plumbing systems.
  • Prepare budgets. Present proposals to customers. Schedule work with other trades and suppliers.
  • Select type and size of pipe required.
  • Locate and mark positions for connections and fixtures.
  • Install supports and hangers for pipe, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Assemble and install valves and fittings.
  • Install, repair, and maintain piping, controls, water heaters, underground piping systems, plumbing fixtures, appliances, trim, toilets, sinks.
  • Test pipe system and fixtures for leaks.

Building Codes and Requirements

  • Apply all codes to installations, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Ensure any work is properly sized, aligned, supported, and meets appropriate building codes and environmental protection.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The Service Plumber must have proficient knowledge:

  • Water distribution and wastewater disposal
  • Relevant building codes, legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team, decision making skills,
  • Effective verbal, presentation and listening skills.
  • Time management skills.
  • Honest, trustworthy, respectful, demonstrating sound work ethics.

Additional Requirements

Work Environment

Working hours may vary week to week depending on the schedule of projects. In general, the schedule is four 10-hour days each week. Service plumber will share after hours on-call duties.

The Service Plumber may have to work long hours outside, will have to lift and adjust heavy objects, encounter hot or very cold supplies and equipment. Plumber must always maintain a safe working practice.
